    The Godmother - Jun 3rd, 2018
Today, I became a Godmother. Again. This time, to my wee nephew, Cameron. And whilst all of my Godchildren—and indeed, all of my nieces and nephews—are very special to me, Cameron marks a special point in my Godmother status. That’s because Cameron is the first of my Godchildren to be baptised; he is the first of my Godchildren to be “bound” to me through a religious ceremony. [more...]

    Homeland holidays: 2018 - Jun 2nd, 2018
I am in the states for my summer holidays. Two weeks of family, friends, and fun. And, hopefully, a bit of nice weather! [more...]

    Zadar: A Catholic girl’s paradise - Sep 30th, 2016
I spent last week in Zadar, Croatia, for an academic conference. But the timing of flights meant that I had a free day to explore the city on either side of the conference. (Yay!) When the trip was first planned, I knew I would spend my days exploring the various churches, monasteries, and convents. Unfortunately, a broken (but healing!) ankle slowed me down a bit so I wasn’t able to see everything I wanted to see. Still, I managed most of the highlights. (But there was no climbing up bell towers, sadly.) [more...]

    Conquering the law - Feb 21st, 2016
I arrived in North Berwick yesterday for my birthday weekend, with a plan to conquer The Law as part of my visit. And since yesterday was spent exploring Tantallon Castle and the coast, today was the day to climb the hill! [more...]

    A religious day in Glasgow - May 17th, 2015
I went to Glasgow for a bit of museum-ing yesterday as part of my efforts to get out of the house a bit more. I didn’t have a real plan for my visit, but I expected that I would enjoy myself—and the day did not disappoint! [more...]

An Easter treasure hunt - Apr 5th, 2015
As the Easter Bunny didn’t leave me any eggs to find at home today, I had to arrange for a wee treasure hunt of my own. And I did it in the way of a geocache near where I live. [more...]

    Lenten rice - Feb 18th, 2015

An unexpectedly sweet day - Apr 17th, 2014
For the last few weeks, I have been struggling to overcome my desire to eat loads of candy and sweets as part of my Lenten sacrifice. If you’re a regular Just Frances reader—or if you know me at all—you will know that giving up sweeties is a fairly major undertaking. [more...]

    Hungry girl - Apr 4th, 2014
I am almost finished with my Lenten sacrifice (only 15 days to go!) and I’m starting to feel hungry. Really, really hungry. But I don’t know if it’s a real, physical hunger or a psychological response to my self-denial. Either way, I’m hungry and I don’t like feeling hungry! [more...]

    Just four years - Feb 15th, 2014
Just Frances is four years old. Wow! Can you believe that I’ve been spewing this utter nonsense for that long? And if you thought I might be nearing the end of rubbish things to talk about, you’re wrong. (No apologies. If you don’t like it, you can just stop reading!) [more...]

    Marriage odds - May 21st, 2013
Eight years ago, I stood at the altar of St John the Baptist Catholic Church and professed my love and dedication to the man who taught me what love was. It was a blessed day filled with joy and laughter and one that I will always remember with happiness. [more...]

    An Easter reflection - Apr 8th, 2012
Easter Sunday is rolling to a close and I’m sitting here thinking about how wonderful my life is because of my Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ. I truly am blessed to have the love of Jesus in my heart and in my soul. He has been a constant in my life and my faith in Him and the salvation He offers has kept me going these past few years. [more...]

    My Good Friday - Apr 6th, 2012
Today is Good Friday, a day of great importance for many Christians—including me. It’s also a day of fasting for Catholics (and maybe other religions?). So, I’m fasting. I’m not starving, but I’m certainly fasting. [more...]

    A Lenten poem - Feb 22nd, 2012
I’ve written about Lent and my beliefs in the past but try as I may, this year I couldn’t come up with the words. Not because of a lack of faith, but rather because I don’t know what more I can add to the discussion. [more...]

    A lesson in carols - Dec 24th, 2011
Being a guest in someone’s home at Christmas means the joy of participating in the traditions of the family. It’s a chance to experience new things and to learn new lessons. In fact, today’s tradition shared was a lesson, indeed. A lesson in carols, that is. [more...]

    More than gifts - Dec 24th, 2011

    The feathers - Aug 16th, 2011
A couple of nights before we had services for Paul in England*, a woman I know told me a story about feathers. She said when angels pass by sometimes their feathers fall to the ground. And that our loved ones become our own angels when they die. [more...]

    A faith-led journey - Mar 9th, 2011
Today is Ash Wednesday; the start of the Lenten season. For 40 days (and six Sundays) I will reflect on my faith and my relationship with Jesus Christ, my Saviour. And as I contemplate the essence of the penitential season meant for the preparation for Easter, I am invigorated by the thought of examining my faith. [more...]

    Sans pancakes - Mar 9th, 2011

    Very fishy - Jul 2nd, 2010

    Going green - Mar 18th, 2010
Across America, people are going green. Not in an effort to be more sensitive to the environment but rather in an effort to get in touch with their inner-Irish. Regardless of family ancestry (mine being Germans from Russia) every American is Irish today. Or is that Oirish? [more...]
