    Cleaning closets - Jul 2nd, 2011
Well, I’ve finally done it. I’ve finally cleaned out Paul’s side of the closet. It only took more than two years… [more...]

    On a positive note - Jun 27th, 2011
Yesterday’s post was a bit sad and whilst I’d love to say that I’m over it and that the world is all unicorns and rainbows and shiny things now, it’s not. It’s going to take a while to get to that point because I have a lot of stuff to go through (mentally, emotionally, and physically) to prepare for my happy future. [more...]

    Schrodie lives!! - Jun 19th, 2011
It was just before 4 a.m. when the screaming howls of cats outside my bedroom window woke me with a start. I ran toward the back door to rescue my cat, only on opening the door I heard the sounds of an animal running into the cedar trees. [more...]

    The packing begins - Jun 5th, 2011
Last weekend the world was really closing in on me. So much so that I had a bit of a breakdown at my folks’ place about the stresses of emptying my house. The process of trying to sell stuff, deciding what to keep, and figuring out how I would manage to get everything I was keeping from my rural home to the homeland more than 200 miles away was just too much. [more...]

    The counting begins - Jun 2nd, 2011
I am counting down the days until The Big Move takes place. Not in exact days mind you, because I won’t buy my ticket until I have my visa in hand. But in some form or another, I’ve been counting down since I got my acceptance email from the University of Stirling way back in November 2010. [more...]

Who am I really talking to? - Jun 1st, 2011
My lovely foster daughter is getting ready for a major life change and I’m amazed at how well she’s handling it. (Or how well she’s pretending to handle it?) After living with me since mid-August, she is now preparing to move on to her permanent home—far, far away from where she grew up. [more...]

    The homeland half - May 29th, 2011
Today was the Inaugural Homeland Memorial Weekend Half Marathon and I came in first place! No, really, I did! [more...]

Music lessons; take two - May 29th, 2011
Back in April I took Paul’s record collection and a turntable to my niece, Flik. This was a much loved gift and she’s since purchased a few new (old) records to add to the collection. Unfortunately, this left her 12-year-old brother, Haden, feeling a bit left out. [more...]

From happy to crash - May 20th, 2011
It’s been a bad day. It started good, but then something happened that caused me to come crashing down. I could tell you what that something was, but it’s so silly and makes me look completely and totally insane and unstable which hurts my ego which just makes the crash so much worse, so let’s just say it was something and leave it at that. [more...]

    Something-9 - May 12th, 2011
Today is my baby sister’s 29th birthday. And in about a month’s time my second-eldest sister will turn 39. [more...]

    Selling swords - May 9th, 2011
I’ve sold all of Paul’s old swords—finally. I’d gone through them with a co-worker back in February but hadn’t gotten around to doing much more. I think I was worried that it would be a long and drawn out process, and I wasn’t looking forward to it. [more...]

For the last time - May 2nd, 2011
Well folks, the Bloomsday 12K results are in. But I’m going to get all melancholy for a bit before I get to that part. [more...]

    A bloomin’ recap - May 1st, 2011
Bloomsday 2011 is over and I’m alive to tell the story! And after little-to-no training, that is a success in itself. Yay! [more...]

    Bloomsday 2011 - May 1st, 2011
Bloomsday 2011 was a blast. And my nephew, Haden, and I ran the entire thing! Check out a recap of the event and see our times! Check out a recap of the event and see our times! [more...]

    13295 + 48065 = Team Awesome - Apr 30th, 2011
OK, I admit that I’m generally pretty rubbish at math[s], but I think I’ve done the calculations right this time! [more...]

    Colour me green - Apr 27th, 2011
The Bloomsday 12K race organisers tell me (via email this morning) that I’m go for green for this weekend’s race. This makes me so happy because I feared my two year hiatus from the event would relegate me to lilac once again. [more...]

    Music lessons - Apr 10th, 2011
It was about a year ago when I first loaded music onto my niece’s iPod. Her mom didn’t (and still doesn’t) have iTunes so her only music was from my collection; which meant her Uncle Paul’s collection, too. We randomly loaded as much music on as would fit and I told her to let me know what she liked and didn’t like and the next time she came to visit we could be pickier about how to use her 8GB of space. [more...]

    Sudoku and swords - Apr 7th, 2011
People bond over the strangest things. Take, for example, my foster daughter and my ANT* Elizabeth (AE) who met for the first time on Sunday. The night AE arrived with my cousin, Carson, the two of them sat at the dining room table pouring over the kid’s artwork (which really is good). [more...]

    Growing up - Apr 3rd, 2011
Well, it’s been a week since my foster daughter planted her fairy garden and I have to say I was sceptical as to if anything would grow. But it’s looking pretty good I think. [more...]

    Bug gear - Mar 15th, 2011
I had a post all ready about how beat tired I was and it was only Monday. But I’m not going to post it because my stress and exhaustion is nothing compared to what my niece is going through right now. [more...]

    On beating children - Mar 12th, 2011
I beat two children today. I didn’t plan to do it. I mean, I expected to beat one, but the other just happened. I also beat two adults. Sadly, I was beaten by a child, too. [more...]

    Team Buggie - Mar 12th, 2011
My awesome niece, Bug, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma the other day. She’s just days away from turning 15 and is an amazing kid. Really. [more...]

Future plans and dreams of the past - Mar 2nd, 2011
I spent an hour or so transferring my old floppy disks onto my external hard drive today and was very pleased with myself for managing to only open six of the files: Three photos, two obituaries, and one assignment from my Sociology 101 course. [more...]

    Swirly tree Ts - Feb 26th, 2011
Right! Remember how I posted a couple of weeks ago about a project I was working on for His Majesty? Well, I can talk about it now. Yay! [more...]

    Thirty-seven birthday wishes - Feb 21st, 2011
Today is my 37th birthday. And the birthday girl gets to make wishes. And I don’t believe in the whole “if you tell anyone your wish it won’t come true” malarkey, so I’m sharing my birthday wishes with you—all 37 of them. [more...]

    Passing the baton - Feb 20th, 2011
I think that one of the saddest things about not having children is the knowledge that there’s no one to pass on your traditions to. Paul and I were so excited about adopting and that was one of the exciting things for us: Passing on our knowledge, love, and traditions to future generations. [more...]

    100 random things - Feb 17th, 2011
My friend posted a list of 100 random things her daughter wrote about herself out of boredom and I thought I’d give it a shot and create my own list. So, if you’re not already bored, this should help… [more...]

    A year of Just Frances - Feb 15th, 2011
It’s been a year since I started Just Frances. Whilst it’s certainly not my first blog, it is unique in that I’ve actually put my name and face to it! [more...]

    Pain-loving partners - Feb 13th, 2011
My nephew, Haden, and I ran the Partners in Pain 5K in Spokane this morning. It was Haden’s second time running the race and my fourth last. The official race times aren’t in yet, but I’m pleased to say that we both beat last year’s time. [more...]

    Too much - Feb 9th, 2011
Sometimes I try to do too much all at once. And sometimes, that means that my coffee table suffers and becomes covered in half-finished projects. [more...]

    Survival kits - Feb 1st, 2011
We have survival kits for camping trips and natural disasters. We have special kits for snake bites and cuts. We keep emergency kits in our cars and we even carry mini-sewing kits when we travel—just in case. But it seems that we don’t keep on hand the important supplies needed to survive the knocks and punches of everyday life. [more...]

Gallery: The second annual “Freeze Your Fanny and Burns’ Supper Extravaganza” was a success! [more...]

    Fannies and haggis - Jan 25th, 2011
The second annual “Freeze Your Fanny and Burns’ Supper Extravaganza” weekend is officially over and I think it was a great success! There were 18 of us for dinner all together and everyone seemed to enjoy the haggis! [more...]

    Insanity descends - Jan 22nd, 2011
Oh my, oh my, oh my! My normally quiet home has transcended into a mad house! But it’s a happy mad house. [more...]

We forgot the camera - Jan 18th, 2011
I almost never go into the upstairs of the house these days because the only things up there are two guest rooms and storage. But I’ve decided to bring the desk down from the small guest room for my foster daughter to use, so I went up this morning to measure it so that I know where to put it when it comes downstairs next weekend. [more...]

    I’m [not] Scottish - Jan 5th, 2011
I am American, born and bred to American parents. My ancestors are Germans from Russia. This means that I am not, contrary to the insistence of some, Scottish. (But I hope to be one day!) [more...]

    Reflections of 2010 - Dec 31st, 2010
As 2010 draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the past year. And if I’m honest, I have to admit that it was a very difficult year and one that I am very glad to put behind me. [more...]

    Christmas goodies - Dec 24th, 2010
I’ve spent the day making Christmas goodies for family and friends. I thought it would put me in the Christmas mood, but it’s really just reminded me of the last time I spent the day making Christmas goodies—about two years ago. [more...]

    How hokey! - Dec 17th, 2010
I think it was Celeste’s wedding when we started the tradition of doing the Hokey Pokey at Cook Girl weddings. I remember all of us girls standing in line together for a photo and one or two of us started goofing around. [more...]

    2010 Christmas card and letter - Dec 16th, 2010
I sent out my Christmas cards on Monday and, as promised, am sharing the card and letter with all of you. After all, just because you’re not on my mailing list doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get the fun of a Christmas card and letter. Right? So, without further ado … [more...]

    Tearful but thankful - Nov 26th, 2010
Well, it would seem that I wasn’t meant to have a proper Thanksgiving this year. I wished for one, and even invited family and friends to join me, but no one was able to come. So instead, I decided that I would make the trip to my homeland to share a traditional turkey dinner with my parents and one of my sisters and her family. [more...]

    Happy 235th birthday, USMC! - Nov 10th, 2010
Since 1775, the United States Marine Corps has been winning battles and defending our nation. On what marks the 235th birthday of the Corps, I want to say that I am proud to be the daughter of two amazing Marines. [more...]

    Blagenda Weekend - Nov 8th, 2010
What do you do with you pumpkins after Halloween? Well, if you’re of Germans from Russia heritage, you make blagenda. Yay! [Photos by my Dad and my foster daughter. [more...]

    Blagenda - Nov 8th, 2010
WooHoo! I made a trip to the homeland this weekend to make blagenda with my folks and one of my sisters. Her kids and my foster daughter got in on the action, too. [more...]

    Alarmed - Nov 6th, 2010
I’m in the homeland this weekend, staying at my sister’s so that we can make blagenda. Sleeping arrangements are pretty simple when I’m here: Sis is in her room downstairs; my foster daughter bunks with my 13-year-old niece upstairs; my 11-year-old nephew is in his room upstairs; and I’m in the living room downstairs. [more...]

    Food foibles - Nov 4th, 2010
So I think I’m a mild food hoarder. Or that I have some weird food obsessions. Or both. I’ve known it for years but mostly lived alone as an adult which made it easier to deal with. [more...]

    On a happier note - Oct 21st, 2010
To counter last night’s less-than-happy post, here’s something I’m super happy about! [more...]

    Donald, where’s yer troosers? - Oct 16th, 2010
I woke up yesterday morning with “Caledonia” going through my head so decided to grab my “The Best Scottish Album in the World…Ever” CD to listen to on the 30-minute drive to town. The kid wasn’t too keen on the departure from our normal car music—the local country western station—so I played a song I thought she’d like (after listening to Caledonia twice, of course). [more...]

    10 on 10-10-10 - Oct 10th, 2010
WooHoo! Today is 10-10-10 and I’ve just run a 10K. Yay! This makes me happy because: [more...]

Ready to run (guest post) - Oct 9th, 2010
Guest post: I’m here in a motel room in Spokane with my aunt for a race tomorrow morning on 10-10-10. After we got to Spokane and got settled in our motel we walked down to the Hilton Courtyard by the Spokane Convention Center to get our running numbers (1172 ME! and 1295 Aunt Awesome!). [more...]
