Cutting out the middles - Oct 14th, 2011
So I’m working on a new design project for my parents. Just a little something that will make Mom smile—and me. (Likely others in the family, too, but I can’t be sure yet.) [more...]

Trick of the treats - Oct 13th, 2011
Oh, what a sweet day it is! I arrived home to see that the postman brought me a parcel all the way from America. Oh yes—a parcel filled with yummy candies from the homeland. [more...]

    Job done! - Oct 2nd, 2011
I am now officially a marathon finisher! Can you believe it? No, neither can I. Today’s feat went much, much better than I expected. And now you get to hear all about it! [more...]

    Why run? - Oct 1st, 2011
I’m running my first—and last—ever marathon in the morning. I’m pretty excited about it, but at the same time I’m rather dreading it. You see, I don’t actually enjoying running exceedingly long distances. 10Ks and 12Ks are fun. [more...]

    Three more sleeps - Sep 29th, 2011
Oh my goodness! Do you realise that there are only three more sleeps until the Loch Ness Marathon? Well, restless sleeps would be my guess, but I’m sure I’ll get a bit of sleep in between now and then. [more...]

Not quite the answer - Sep 27th, 2011
Today is my eldest sister’s birthday. Yep. The big something-or-other. I’ll give you a hint: She’s a year shy of being the answer to life, the universe, and everything. (More hints can be found here.) [more...]

    Rationalised spending - Sep 26th, 2011
Yesterday was meant to be my last training run before my first (and last) ever marathon next Sunday. Only plans got changed. As they do. [more...]

    Classy lady - Sep 23rd, 2011
It’s here! My first week of classes has finally happened! After a long journey of ups and downs and a false start or two, I am finally a postgraduate student. And here’s the promised update on that very topic! [more...]

    Sign here - Sep 21st, 2011
Remember how I said that I think I found a new flat? Well, yesterday I paid the deposit and today I picked up the contracts, which means I’m one step closer to a home of my own again—even if only a temporary one. [more...]

    Reflections - Sep 20th, 2011
The home I had in America was my dream home. Paul and I spent more than two years searching for the perfect place to raise a family and I remember how we both just knew this little yellow house was the place from the moment we walked through the front door. [more...]

One down; one long one to go - Sep 18th, 2011
I ran my first-ever non-American race today—a gentle 10K through my new home of Stirling. I’ve been neglecting my training so I was actually quite pleased with my time. (Sorry, you have to read more before you get that bit of information!) [more...]

    Potentially home - Sep 14th, 2011
Earlier today I mentioned that there was some good news in my search for a flat and I have been asked by a couple of friends over the past few days about my progress, so here’s the update: I think I’ve found a new flat! [more...]

    Honestly, I’ll keep blogging - Sep 14th, 2011
It would seem that I’m not very good at this whole blogging thing of late, and I apologise for that. I suppose that it has a lot to do with the fact that I am no longer living in near isolation—meaning I have real life people to talk to—and that I have been running around quite a bit visiting family and friends and getting ready for the start of term. [more...]

    I’ve been ID’d - Sep 9th, 2011
Yippy! I picked up my student ID card today and am officially able to get student discounts now. Yay!! Though, funnily, the only student discount I’ve gotten so far was for my bus fare on the way to campus. I stepped aboard and asked if it was the bus to campus and was kindly told it was and asked if I had my student ID—to which I said no, as I was on my way to pick it up. [more...]

    Bit of a wander - Aug 30th, 2011
Yesterday was a completely new experience for me: Walking through the English countryside. The walk was suggested by Paul’s cousin, Olwen, and I happily accepted the offer. Though if I’m honest, I didn’t really know what to expect for it! [more...]

    Wakey culture - Aug 24th, 2011
I made my way down to Wakefield, England, yesterday to visit with my sister-in-law, Ann, for a few days. I’ve made several trips here over the past eight+ years and have always enjoyed it. But today was a different sort of day out in Wakefield because I went to my first art museum here—the newly opened Hepworth Wakefield. [more...]

    By the sea - Aug 21st, 2011
Today has been a seaside day. But not just one seaside—three of them! Or, really, I suppose it was all the same sea, but just three different seaside towns. [more...]

Home away from home away from home - Aug 16th, 2011
Today I left my new home in Stirling to take a train journey to Billingham, England—Paul’s hometown and home to some of my in-laws. My sister-in-law, Liz, and niece, Rachel, met me at the train station to bring me to my English ‘weekend’ home. [more...]

    The feathers - Aug 16th, 2011
A couple of nights before we had services for Paul in England*, a woman I know told me a story about feathers. She said when angels pass by sometimes their feathers fall to the ground. And that our loved ones become our own angels when they die. [more...]

    A palatial day - Aug 15th, 2011
Today wasn’t spent in my new home of Stirling, but rather in my old home of Edinburgh—the city I first moved to ten years ago. In fact, I spent the day with a friend from my old Edinburgh days! [more...]

    Got there - Aug 13th, 2011
I suppose this is a good time to give an update on my travels, since I’ve arrived in Stirling, Scotland, and am now out and about enjoying the free WiFi access. So, here we go: [more...]

    In flight - Aug 12th, 2011
Ah, the modern world. Don’t you love how it’s filled with gadgets and gizmos aplenty and whozits and whatzits galore? After all, it means that I can bring you this blog update from an airplane some 10,000 feet above the ground! [more...]

    Caledonia, I’m going home! - Aug 11th, 2011
Wow! Can you believe that I’m flying ‘home’ to Scotland tomorrow? Or should I say today, since it’s past midnight in the homeland (why am I still awake!?) and morning time in Scotland. [more...]

    Hello; goodbye - Aug 10th, 2011
Today I said hello to an old friend from high school for the first time since high school. Sadly, I also said goodbye to her. (Or more accurately: I’ll see you again, and in less than 20 years this time!) [more...]

The Doctor is in - Aug 9th, 2011
Today is the long-awaited Doctor Who Marathon with my 14-year-old niece, Flik; 13-year-old niece, Cassandra; and Flik’s best friend, Hattie. [more...]

    Running goodbyes - Aug 7th, 2011
A few months ago, I decided that I wanted to run ‘one last race’ with my nephews before I left for Scotland, so I searched out the race that was closest to my departure date. And that race was today. [more...]

    Eggs benny - Aug 7th, 2011
Last night I drove out to Vantage for Girls’ Weekend at The Beach House—my second ever girls’ weekend, though sadly I was only able to attend one evening. [more...]

    Fun with maths - Aug 4th, 2011
[Please note that the ‘S’ at the end of maths was intentional, and not an error. It’s part of my attempt to use that funny British English stuff, since that’s (almost) home. However, I’m not quite ready to add the ‘S’ to words such as toward, forward, and backward. [more...]

    An awesome Monday - Aug 1st, 2011
I’ve had a pretty awesome Monday, if you wondered. It started when I woke up at 6 a.m. and checked my email. That’s when I learned that I’d been awarded a £2,000 Scotland Saltire Scholarship toward my tuition at the University of Stirling. [more...]

At the beach: A holiday recap - Jul 25th, 2011
I suppose it’s time for a holiday recap, since my Washington Coast holiday is over. So, here goes! [more...]

    On my holidays - Jul 22nd, 2011
So here I am at Copalis Beach with my pretty new gadget, LittleGreen. Yes, my holidays have officially begun. Well, that’s if you can have a holiday when you don’t have a job. [more...]

    Now about that marathon… - Jul 20th, 2011
You’d be forgiven for forgetting that I’m meant to be training for a marathon, since I’ve not really brought up the subject recently, but I really am still planning to participate (and complete) the Loch Ness Marathon in Scotland on October 2. [more...]

    Green means go - Jul 20th, 2011
Today was Shiny New Gadget Day, which is always a celebratory day for me. And today’s gadget was a Dell Inspiron Mini 1012—a wee green computing machine! [more...]

    Playing Make Believe - Jul 18th, 2011
I met a make believe friend for the first time today in Seattle. Yay! What fun we had wandering around laughing and being silly! [more...]

    Playing make believe - Jul 18th, 2011
Avid readers of Just Frances will remember that I shared my thankfulness for ‘make believe friends’ this past Thanksgiving. Well, it seems that my sister, Celeste, shared that story with her make believe friends at the same time. [more...]

An unemployed, homeless transient - Jul 17th, 2011
Last summer I shared with you my rocky start in life as an illegitimate, homeless transient. Well, it would seem that I’m back to a less-than-ideal lifestyle again. [more...]

    So, I made you a mixed tape - Jul 13th, 2011
About two months ago I wrote about how distraught and heartbroken I was over the apparent loss of my beloved first (and only) mixed tape (CD) that Paul made me shortly before we got married. I was really starting to lose all hope of ever finding it, but then it happened—I found it! [more...]

    Jobless - Jul 9th, 2011
After five years at Washington State University, I am now officially unemployed. Funnily, my five-year service certificate arrived today, too! [more...]

    Boom! Bang! - Jul 4th, 2011
Today is the 235th birthday of my beloved America. I always get a bit weepy on Independence Day because my patriotism always gets the better of me. Of course, today I realised that next year I won’t be in America for the big celebration, and whilst I’m happy that I’ll be in my adopted home of Scotland, I’m a bit sad knowing I won’t be here to celebrate my heritage. [more...]

The last long weekend - Jul 4th, 2011
I’m in the homeland enjoying a four-day weekend before the start of my final (three-day) work week. And as it happens to be Pioneer Days Weekend (in celebration of Independence Day) there is lots going on! [more...]

Have visa; will travel - Jun 25th, 2011
I got my UK visa today! Yay!! Actually, I got the email on Monday telling me I’d been approved, but wanted to wait until it was in my hands before telling you about it. It should have been delivered Tuesday, but a blunder at the consulate meant that I had to make the long drive to Spokane to pick it up in person. [more...]

    I’ve got spirit, yes I do! - Jun 24th, 2011
Today I had lunch with a couple of ladies from the state’s foster care office—one was the woman who licenced me and Paul nearly three years ago and the other was the social worker for my now-former foster daughter. [more...]

    Schrodie lives!! - Jun 19th, 2011
It was just before 4 a.m. when the screaming howls of cats outside my bedroom window woke me with a start. I ran toward the back door to rescue my cat, only on opening the door I heard the sounds of an animal running into the cedar trees. [more...]

    Seller’s blues - Jun 17th, 2011
For two weeks now, I’ve been selling loads of stuff on CraigsList and I can’t believe how mixed my emotions are at the process. The stuff I’m selling is just stuff; random, run-of-the-mill stuff. It’s not treasured items with high sentimental value. [more...]

    A happy-sad goodbye - Jun 11th, 2011
One of my favourite bits of furniture was an old 1950s(ish) green padded sewing stool. I wish I didn’t have to do it, but I said goodbye to it today. Parting with my stuff is very hard, and I really thought that parting with this awesome little guy would be hard, too. [more...]

    Horsin’ around - Jun 11th, 2011
Like many girls her age, my foster daughter is a horse freak. I mean, she gets really, really, really, excited about the idea of horses. Me? I’m not really into them so much. I mean, I like them and all, but I don’t get excited about them. [more...]

    A nickel for my thoughts - Jun 11th, 2011
As I walked to my car after work today, I noticed a nickel lying on the sidewalk and smiled as I swooped down to pick it up without missing a step. I mean, it’s only a nickel and most people wouldn’t have bothered, but as I’ve blogged before about my willingness to stop for coins, it shouldn’t be surprising to know that I’ve done it again. [more...]

    Pieces of noon - Jun 8th, 2011
Once again, I’ve become lax in my efforts to reclaim my lunch hour. In fact, the last time I made a deliberate effort to do so was back in March! OK, in fairness I have taken a couple of lunch-time trips to Moscow for optical appointments but that’s just not the same. But I digress… [more...]

Three cheers for Monday! - Jun 7th, 2011
To make up for my last few sad(ish) posts, here’s a happy one for you (times three)! [more...]

    Visa blues - Jun 4th, 2011
I made my way up to Spokane today for my biometrics appointment as part of my visa application for The Big Move to Scotland. You would think that this news would have me extremely happy, but I just can’t find the joy today. [more...]
