    Copy bird - Oct 27th, 2010
In the evenings, you will quite often find me and the kid in the living room not talking*: Her on the love seat reading or drawing; me on the couch crocheting, blogging, or—most recently—sketching and drawing. And you can bet that at some point she will come over and start snooping at what I’m doing with great curiosity. [more...]

    Today I will… - Oct 25th, 2010
Today’s writing prompt was to write for ten minutes starting with the words “Today I will…”. So when lunch came around I grabbed my laptop and a cup of tea, set a timer, and wrote. [more...]

    A bit sketchy - Oct 24th, 2010
I signed up for The Sketchbook Project a few weeks ago. It’s a great art project from the Brooklyn Art Library where thousands of sketchbooks will be exhibited on a cross-country tour at galleries and museums. After the tour, they will all be part of a permanent collection at the library where they will be available for the public to view. [more...]

    Donald, where’s yer troosers? - Oct 16th, 2010
I woke up yesterday morning with “Caledonia” going through my head so decided to grab my “The Best Scottish Album in the World…Ever” CD to listen to on the 30-minute drive to town. The kid wasn’t too keen on the departure from our normal car music—the local country western station—so I played a song I thought she’d like (after listening to Caledonia twice, of course). [more...]

    Curly - Oct 9th, 2010
So, I’ve had my hair curled. And how awesome is it that the intransitive verb mentions one of my favourite foods (bacon) and the sport of my favourite (non-native) country (Scotland)?! Yay! [more...]

Ready to run (guest post) - Oct 9th, 2010
Guest post: I’m here in a motel room in Spokane with my aunt for a race tomorrow morning on 10-10-10. After we got to Spokane and got settled in our motel we walked down to the Hilton Courtyard by the Spokane Convention Center to get our running numbers (1172 ME! and 1295 Aunt Awesome!). [more...]

    Fired! - Oct 7th, 2010
A week and a half ago the kid and I went to Wild @ Art to paint ceramics but we had to leave the painted pieces behind so that they could be put in the kiln and fired. And today I went to pick them up. [more...]

    A shape haiku - Oct 6th, 2010
As I work toward my goal of publishing a book I’ve found myself spending a lot of time re-learning different forms of poetry. Added to that, I’ve found that forcing myself to put thoughts in to a predetermined form is helpful as I try to identify my emotions. And blah, blah, blah… [more...]

    Working weekend - Oct 4th, 2010
Wow! What a great weekend! And you want to know why? Well, it’s because I spent most of it in the homeland working toward three of my goals. [more...]

    An inspirational lunch - Oct 1st, 2010
I remember visiting a friend not too long ago and being shocked to learn that he rarely took advantage of the great cultural and historical sites around him. I challenged him to use his lunch hour to see some of the places from time-to-time. [more...]

    My favourite things - Sep 28th, 2010
As part of my effort to take back my lunch time, I’ve spent today’s lunch break composing a little ditty on my laptop just for my awesome readers; who are also some of my favourite things. (Yay! for awesome readers! And yay! for reclaimed lunch breaks. And yay! for whatever else you want to celebrate today!) [more...]

I’d like to tell you that I’m completely over my blue mood, but that would be a lie. I have, however, been having an enjoyable weekend despite it. [more...]

Relearning the art of childhood - Sep 26th, 2010
A while back I picked up a piece of bond paper and a box of crayons to illustrate a silly little image to go along with my goals posting. A few days after that I grabbed a couple more sheets of paper from the printer then borrowed my foster daughter’s colored pencils to illustrate each individual goal. [more...]

    Taking back lunch - Sep 23rd, 2010
I’ve been skipping lunch for years. Well, that’s strictly not true. I’ve been eating lunch (most days) but I eat at my desk whilst working. I don’t actually leave my office. [more...]

    Thanking the anonymous - Sep 22nd, 2010
When I arrived home from England last week there was a happy surprise waiting for me in the post. It was a simple gesture: A short note and some cash directing me to do something nice for myself as a way of ‘paying forward’ the loving reach of a foster mom a couple of generations ago. [more...]

    Sometimes I want to… - Sep 21st, 2010
Sometimes I want to scream at the top of my lungs. I want to yell. I want to shout. I want to wail about how unfair everything seems at times. [more...]

    God’s Eyes - Sep 19th, 2010
On the drive home from the airport Friday evening, I started to think about Ojo de Dios (God’s Eyes). I don’t know what brought the thought to mind, but I’m sure it was a winding road of completely unrelated subjects. (A regular journey in my crazy little mind.) [more...]

    Being silly - Sep 16th, 2010
Right, I promised a more cheerful post the other day and I’m pleased to say that I don’t even have to be fake cheerful! You see, a few weeks ago my friend in Scotland sent me a link for an online art course called The Art of Silliness2 and yesterday was the first day of instruction. Yay! [more...]

    Art? - Sep 1st, 2010
I wish I was an artist. You know—a really good one. I wish I could draw things with ease and make them look pretty. In my mind I can see myself standing there with a paint palette creating these amazingly-beautiful landscapes or amazingly-accurate portraits. [more...]

The cost of vanity - Aug 31st, 2010
For more than a year I’ve been telling myself to get some really nice, quality face moisturizer because grief can really take a toll on your skin. Between the constant crying, the lack of sleep, and the absolutely rubbish diet, my once-smooth skin began to age in triple-time shortly after Paul died. [more...]

    Goals update - Aug 29th, 2010
Nearly three weeks ago, I posted my goals and promised that I would soon update each goal with a list of tasks required to accomplish them. Well, I’ve finally gotten the initial task lists posted—along with hand-drawn images because I was a bit bored last night. [more...]

    Beaming with pride - Aug 27th, 2010
Around 4:30 this morning Schrodie really started to get on my nerves. She was zipping around the house like crazy; pounding on the wood floors like mad. It wasn’t long before she was in my room scuffling around in my shoes under the vanity. [more...]

    Having a Ball (and a Martini) - Aug 20th, 2010
It’s pickle season. That means that when I come home from work tomorrow the house will be full of people and pickle making supplies. [more...]

    Being positive - Aug 18th, 2010
I’m in full-on “fake it ‘til you make it“ mode these days. Or, at least, I’m trying to be. So today’s bit of inspiration from my way-awesome “Be Good to Yourself” calendar seemed fitting. [more...]

    Setting goals - Aug 10th, 2010

To market, to market - Aug 7th, 2010
I was looking forward to the Moscow Farmers’ Market opening last year but Paul died before we ever made it there and I couldn’t bring myself to go alone until today. I suppose that it was easy to go today because I’ve gotten back into cooking and I was in need of beets and cabbage so that I could make borscht. [more...]

    Getting ready - Jul 30th, 2010
Girls’ Weekend starts tomorrow. It’s bad enough that (despite the fact I’d blocked my schedule off from 3:00 p.m. onwards) that I have a 4:00 p.m. meeting prior to the four-hour drive to get to the Beach House, but now I’ve just realized that my way-awesome new inflatable inner tube river floaty thingy doesn’t use an air mattress pump OR a bicycle pump. [more...]

    I SCREAM! - Jul 22nd, 2010
My nephew and I enjoyed a nice picnic dinner before spending two hours hiking Kamiak Butte last night. We’d decided before the trip that we would treat ourselves to ice cream after we were done. We’d also decided that licorice ice cream would play a role in our double-scooped treats. [more...]

    Building my library - Jul 18th, 2010
I posted a while back about my mission to expand my incredibly eclectic music collection, with the goal to fill my iPod Classic to its capacity of 40,000 songs. Since then, I’ve purchased a few CDs and have borrowed CDs from various family and friends. [more...]

    Go Wine! - Jul 12th, 2010
Uncle Mike finally found his way to the Palouse for a day of wine tasting! (Can you believe it!?) He showed up Saturday evening and on Sunday morning we went into town to taste some of the finest wines the Palouse has to offer. [more...]

    Reflections of joy - Jul 1st, 2010
My 2010 New Year’s Resolution was to find a little bit of joy each day. I started a gallery so that I could post a picture of each day’s joyful finding because I knew it would force me to continue on with my resolution. [more...]

    A lazy day - Jun 27th, 2010
I started the day off thinking I’d do some weeding in the garden. Maybe work on my tan a bit. So, I broke out the gardening tools and poured a glass of cheap-and-cheerful white wine. Then Schrodie came by to visit and reminded me it was a Sunday. [more...]

    Green with envy - Jun 9th, 2010
I got a new toy today. It’s a lovely new, bright, and shiny 4 GB iPod Shuffle. It’s a pretty shade of green with a personalized inscription. [more...]

    Lady Warriors - May 29th, 2010
I took the day off work yesterday to watch my niece and her high school softball team play in the first day of the state championship play-offs. After a bit of a rain delay, the Cle Elum Roslyn Warriors beat the Montesano Bulldogs 2 – 1. [more...]

To be blissfully happy - May 20th, 2010
Sometimes I need to be reminded of my ultimate goal in life: To be blissfully happy. On those days, I reflect on one of my favorite poems, Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann. His words are truly inspirational to me. I look forward to the day when joy and happiness come as easily as breathing again… [more...]

    Solar-powered clothes dryer - May 16th, 2010
Carrying on with the hippy-granola-freak of a homeowner theme, I’m pleased to announce that I got to use one of my favorite house-hold appliances today for the first time of the year. Yes, I’m talking about my way-awesome solar-powered clothes dryer! [more...]

    Child labor - May 10th, 2010
I don’t know who decided that child labor was a bad thing. I mean, I had four children over for the weekend and I feel it would have been more abusive to not let them work! When they arrived Friday night, one of the first questions was what chores there were to be done. [more...]

    McKean’s - May 3rd, 2010
McKean’s Drive-In is the local burger joint in my hometown and is a true institution. When I was in school several of my friends worked there—as did I when they needed the extra hands and I wasn’t already working my waitressing job at the truck stop down the road. [more...]

    Great neighbors - Apr 21st, 2010
When we bought our house, Paul and I really looked forward to tending to the garden. With a lot of nearly 10,000 square feet, we knew it would be a lot of work, but we didn’t care. That first spring and summer we were out almost every weekend and really made it beautiful. [more...]

    Easter at Kamiak - Apr 4th, 2010
I decided to spend Easter Sunday hiking Kamiak Butte. I wish you could have joined me, but as you couldn’t, I brought you along in my heart and soul instead. [more...]

    Indoor-outdoor cat - Mar 24th, 2010
Last summer I purchased a slightly-expensive, gadgety cat door for Schrodie. It’s great because it is sensor-activated, meaning that only Schrodie can come and go—eliminating the fears and nightmares of Satan’s evil footmen (that means skunks) entering my home through the door. [more...]

    Home, sweet Scotland - Mar 3rd, 2010
We arrived in Scotland yesterday afternoon to bright sunny skies. Our plan had been to spend the day winding up the English coast and stay somewhere on the England/Scotland border so that we could arrive in Scotland first thing this morning, but Scotland must have been calling me home because one England-based plan after another fell through so we just headed toward the border. [more...]
