The plastic planet predicament - Jan 15th, 2017
Anyone paying attention should know by now that the gloriousness of plastic is less than glorious. And, in fact, our planet is in quite the predicament because of it all! Sadly, part of the predicament we’re in is that we can’t really live without plastic in the modern society. Not, at least, at the present. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try. Right? [more...]

    Hand-me-downs - Dec 13th, 2014
Growing up in a large family, hand-me-down clothing was a regular part of life. It wasn’t necessarily something I hated (after all, I really wanted some of them!) but it certainly wasn’t something I was immensely excited about. I mean, everyone else got brand-new clothes all the time. Everyone. All the time. [more...]

    Just four years - Feb 15th, 2014
Just Frances is four years old. Wow! Can you believe that I’ve been spewing this utter nonsense for that long? And if you thought I might be nearing the end of rubbish things to talk about, you’re wrong. (No apologies. If you don’t like it, you can just stop reading!) [more...]

    Holey-sock monkey - Jan 13th, 2013
I love my knee-high stripey socks and was a bit sad when I wore a hole through the toe of one of them over the summer. But I decided that maybe I’d make a sock monkey with them. So I put the socks aside for my future crafting project. [more...]

    Sunday roast - Feb 12th, 2012
Sunday roast is a pretty big thing here in the UK. So much so that even Paul—a 30+ year vegetarian—insisted that we enjoyed a big Sunday roast (sans dead animal for him!) most weeks. Mostly, we’d just have roasted veg, mashed potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings; sometimes even a bit of boiled cabbage. [more...]

    Lovely latkes - Jan 23rd, 2012
I love latkes. They’re amazingly delicious and super duper easy to make; inexpensive, too. And the best thing about them (today) is that they fit the bill for my Dark Days Challenge. (I realise it’s been more than a month since I last posted a DDC meal, but it’s not because I’ve not been eating local, rather it’s because I haven’t been blogging about it.) [more...]

    Steak and potatoes - Dec 19th, 2011
OK boys and girls, today is my first meal prepared for the Dark Days Challenge. Not that I haven’t been eating some local foods all along, but tonight’s dinner is special because it’s all about the local stuff! [more...]

    The dark days - Dec 16th, 2011
The dark days of winter are upon us. Oh yes, they really are. Even more so here in Scotland compared to my (only slightly) lower-latitude homeland. But those nine degrees don’t make a difference when you’re in the deep dark of winter. [more...]

    Papier-Mâché Pumpkins - Oct 24th, 2010
Halloween means pumpkins and pumpkins mean fun! My foster daughter and I managed to fill two weekends with fun by making papier-mâché pumpkins. Read about the making of the pumpkins here and here. (Most of these photos were taken by my foster daughter.) [more...]

    Papier-mâché pumpkins; Part 1 - Oct 17th, 2010
Yay! We’ve been busy making papier-mâché pumpkins for two days now. I’m using a new technique (no balloons for this gal!) and it seems to be working out pretty well. I had to buy some orange paint, but other than that everything is either recycled materials or general household junk (staples, duct tape, flour, etc) which is pretty cool! [more...]

    Solar-powered clothes dryer - May 16th, 2010
Carrying on with the hippy-granola-freak of a homeowner theme, I’m pleased to announce that I got to use one of my favorite house-hold appliances today for the first time of the year. Yes, I’m talking about my way-awesome solar-powered clothes dryer! [more...]

    Modern mowing - May 13th, 2010
I’m not a patient person. When I know what I want, I want it now. So, after breaking out the vintage mower yesterday and deciding it was time for an upgrade, I couldn’t think of much more throughout the day. I wanted my new toy. I wanted it today. And I wanted it cheap. [more...]

    Retro mowing - May 12th, 2010
When Paul and I bought our house two years ago, we decided that we wanted to continue our “hippy-granola-freak” lifestyle in our yard care efforts. So, I picked up the old (and I mean old!) lawn mower from my folks’ house the weekend we moved. [more...]
