    A new PB! - Mar 9th, 2014
Wow, oh wow! I just don’t know what to say other than that. Just ... Wow!! (Don’t worry; I’ll manage to find more words, too.) [more...]

    Ready to run - Mar 7th, 2014
I’m heading to Inverness later today for a fun and exciting weekend of running. And for as much as I’ve been dreading it, I’m kind of starting to look forward to it now. (I’m sure I will regret it all come Monday though.) [more...]

    Just four years - Feb 15th, 2014
Just Frances is four years old. Wow! Can you believe that I’ve been spewing this utter nonsense for that long? And if you thought I might be nearing the end of rubbish things to talk about, you’re wrong. (No apologies. If you don’t like it, you can just stop reading!) [more...]

    A year of halfs - Feb 4th, 2014
This is a hard post for me to share because once I say it I have to follow through with it. But here goes: I am not going to run any full marathons in 2014. Instead, I’m going to concentrate on improving my speed for shorter races—all with a goal of a sub-2:00:00 half marathon. [more...]

    Prioritising me - Jan 31st, 2014
When I wake up tomorrow it will be February; the shortest month in the calendar year and my birthday month. Yes, by the end of the month I will finally be a 40-year-old woman. I’m not freaked out about that (yet!) because age is only a number, but I do admit that my birthdays have been (in general) times of personal reflection in recent years. Only this year, the reflection has begun a bit early. [more...]

Two halfs, to start - Jan 5th, 2014
I set myself a challenge in 2012 and 2013 to run a race each month, but failed to achieve success because of illness, race cancellations, and life’s chaos. When it came time to think about my 2014 running goals, I realised that I would be unlikely to succeed in a race-a-month challenge for a variety of reasons, but I knew I needed to set a goal of some type. [more...]

    Changing challenges - Sep 14th, 2013
I have had the worst luck with my 2013 Race a Month Challenge. In fact, I knew a couple of months ago that the odds of success were heavily stacked against me. And as my efforts to make up for lost time haven't worked, I have finally decided to give up. Well, I have finally decided to change the focus of my challenge at least. [more...]

    The daydream - Sep 1st, 2013
I daydream. I always have and I always will. I suppose that it’s harmless, though it does sometimes mean that I pin a bit of hope on the happy endings I (almost) always allow myself in my fantasies. [more...]

Finding rainbows through the tears - Aug 26th, 2013
I’m not a big fan of the rain but when the skies open up I do find myself looking—and hoping—for a rainbow. Rainbows make me smile; they make me happy; they warm my soul. So, I’ve decided that I will try something new by looking—and hoping—for a rainbow in my tears. You know, because tears are sort of like rain. [more...]

    Saving strengths - Aug 20th, 2013
Following up on yesterday’s post, today I am acknowledging the strengths that save me from the bitterness of my weaknesses. These are a bit more difficult to share because I always feel like others will deny these things to be present in my life (that’s the self-esteem issue I talked about yesterday!) but I have to acknowledge them in myself so that I can counter the bad things I acknowledge. [more...]

    Rained out - Jul 28th, 2013
Today I was meant to run the Donkey Brae 7-Miler in Aberdour, only the rain scuppered my plans. Not because I can’t run in the rain. Not because the race was cancelled. Rather, it was because my ceiling fell in. [more...]

    Half-way to failure - Jul 1st, 2013
A year ago this time, I was excitedly telling you that I was half-way to succeeding in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge. Sadly, half-way through my 2013 challenge, I’m here to tell you that I’m failing miserably. [more...]

    I look good naked - Jun 25th, 2013
I am a runner. I eat pizza. I drink beer. And I look good naked. [more...]

    Running nightmares - May 26th, 2013
As most people do, I have bad dreams from time-to-time—the bothersome little dreams that haunt you all day long: Showing up to a test unprepared; arriving at a party without your shoes or shirt; running through the forest from some unknown monster. [more...]

    A disappointing time - Apr 28th, 2013
I have just completed my slowest-ever 10K race and I don’t know how I feel about that. I am embarrassed and humiliated—and very angry with myself. But I don’t know if I should feel that way or if, instead, I should feel pleased that I crossed the finish line at all. [more...]

    The Edinburgh countdown - Apr 20th, 2013
Five weeks from tomorrow, I will be running the Edinburgh Marathon. I am, to say the least, unprepared. But I’m not about to let a lack of training stop me from finishing. That would just be silly. Plus that, I owe it to my number benefactor to finish—and to finish strong! [more...]

    A runner’s reflection - Apr 16th, 2013
Yesterday’s news of the bombings in the final stretch of the Boston Marathon has shaken me. Like many runners, the shock of it all has been hard to comprehend. Though I am well-aware that it's not just runners who are at a loss—this senseless act of terror has caused people from around the world to recoil in disbelief. [more...]

    Superstar! - Apr 15th, 2013
Today was a very different—very fun!—day for me because I got to be a big important film star for the day. There were script reviews, costume changes, and everything. I even had someone opening and closing my car door as we drove between filming locations. [more...]

    Running with music - Mar 15th, 2013
There was an interesting piece in The Guardian’s Running Blog yesterday about running with music. The post offered insights from two runners—a pro-music runner and a no-music runner—and it got me thinking about how my own stance has changed over the years. (Just as the no-music runner’s did, only in reverse.) [more...]

    January in March - Mar 3rd, 2013
I have finally managed to complete my first race of 2013 as part of my Race a Month Challenge. The race, the Buchlyvie 10K, was meant to take place on January 26 but was cancelled due to ice, so I’m still counting it as my January accomplishment. (I think that’s acceptable.) [more...]

    A challenging challenge - Feb 27th, 2013
With February fast approaching her end, I am saddened to report that I have still not managed to run a race as part of my 2013 Race a Month Challenge. Not for a lack of trying, however, as my January race was cancelled due to ice and my February plans have all been scuppered due to on-going Forestry Commission work on my local Park Run’s route. [more...]

    Marathon madness - Feb 12th, 2013
Two years ago, I decided to sign up for my ‘one and only’ marathon. And I ran that marathon and insisted I would never do one again. [more...]

    My PKD belly [?] - Feb 10th, 2013
Today I want to talk about my belly; my slightly-larger-than-it-should-be belly. And, in a way, I want to talk about my crazy brain and its way of justifying things that may (or may not) be right or wrong. [more...]

    Another running failure - Jan 31st, 2013
It would seem that I’m really struggling with my running goals these days because not only did I fail on my last two races of 2012, but my first race of 2013 didn’t happen either! Yep, the 2013 Buchlyvie 10K was called on account of ice. [more...]

    Challenge 2013: A race a month - Jan 2nd, 2013
I failed ever-so-slightly in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge, but I enjoyed it so much that I’m challenging myself to the same feat for 2013. It’s not really my resolution for the year—which is to continue hoping for good things—it’s more of a lifestyle choice. [more...]

New year; new hopes - Jan 1st, 2013
I like to start each year with a bright, fresh outlook; with a renewed hope for joy and happiness. But I must admit that I hadn’t planned to start 2013 that way. In fact, the post that I wrote over the past few days was one of despair. [more...]

    So long, 2012! - Dec 31st, 2012
If I am honest, I would have to say that 2012 has been a pretty unhappy year. I think it’s been even worse because I had such high hopes for it; I suppose that hoping for happiness only served to set me up for greater disappointments. [more...]

    A successful failure - Dec 27th, 2012
I suppose it’s time I acknowledge that my 2012 Race a Month Challenge wasn’t as successful as I’d hoped. However, I am still calling it a success because I truly did have the best of intentions. [more...]

October: The missing month - Nov 14th, 2012
I’ve thought long and hard about how to handle the month of October for my blog. You know, since I only posted twice before the site went down for essential maintenance. [more...]

    Run, Frances, Run! - Oct 21st, 2012
I run. And this is where you’ll find photos to back up that claim. Check out the Ryan Road Race Record for races prior to 2010. [more...]

Three cheers for the cheerers - Oct 1st, 2012
Well, that’s the Loch Ness Marathon done, and I am pleased to say that I improved my time over last year. The weather was pretty decent (could have been warmer for my liking) and the high I got from putting myself through the torture—and crossing the finish line!—was amazing. [more...]

Heading to the start - Sep 29th, 2012
In about 24 hours, I will be running my second marathon. I know I’d said I was only ever doing one, but I was kind of challenged (dared?) by a friend and I can’t resist a good challenge. [more...]

    A bloody Stirling day - Sep 16th, 2012
Today was fabulous—even as I sit here with aching muscles and feel completely wrecked. The day started off well, after a fantastic night’s sleep in my new bed, and even though it’s only early evening, I think it’s going to end pretty well, too. [more...]

    A great run - Sep 2nd, 2012
Today was Race Number Nine in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge and I’m pretty excited about it. It was the Great Scottish Run ½ Marathon in Glasgow (that’s 13.1 miles, if you wondered) and I finished under goal time! [more...]

    A 10K and a curry - Aug 25th, 2012
Today was the Drymen 10K in, well, Drymen, Scotland. It was also race Number 8 in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge. It was also my first time out with my friend, David, who will be starting the Loch Ness Marathon with me this year. (I say starting with me, because I’m quite certain he’ll finish well before me!) [more...]

    Seven for seven - Jul 22nd, 2012
Today was race number seven in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge. And if you didn’t guess it from the title of this post, it was a seven-mile race. (And the seventh month of the year, but that’s kind of obvious since it is the seventh month of the challenge, hence it being race number seven. But I digress…) [more...]

The cruelty of random memories - Jul 14th, 2012
There is something ever-so-cruel about random memories. OK, not always. In fact, most of the time random memories are happy moments. But sometimes, like today, they’re just reminders of a future that was stolen from me. [more...]

    Dissertation month update; Part 1 - Jul 3rd, 2012
Just a quick dissertation update for you today, since I did promise that this would be Dissertation Month. [more...]

    Half way - Jun 30th, 2012
It’s June 30; the last day of the first half of 2012 and the half-way point for my 2012 Race a Month Challenge. [more...]

Loch Ness; Take two - Jun 25th, 2012
Do you remember when I told you that I was going to run the Loch Ness Marathon in honour of Paul? And how after I ran it, I told you I was never going to run another marathon? [more...]

    Toenails - Jun 19th, 2012
I went back-and-forth about what I should post today and for a brief moment, I even thought that I might not post at all. But then I remembered that I promised I’d post more—in part to prevent myself from withdrawing from society all together. [more...]

    Half done - May 27th, 2012
I completed my second half marathon today. Well, that’s if you can count last year’s Inaugural Homeland Memorial Half Marathon. Which I do. Only today’s half wasn’t in the homeland (though it was on Memorial Weekend). [more...]

    Quiet-ness - May 26th, 2012
I’ve been quiet again. (Still?) So I feel that I should pop in and say hello, since so often I’m quiet when life is hard and I’m feeling down. But that’s not the case right now. Well, mostly not the case. [more...]

Running round the mulberry bush - Apr 22nd, 2012
Today was another race day as part of my Race a Month goal I set this year with the ever-amazing Rebecca. And, as often happens post-race, I feel great! (Worn out and tired, but great!) [more...]

    A weighty issue - Apr 14th, 2012
I’m fat. No, that’s not true. That’s so far from the truth that it’s laughable. Heck, I’m not even overweight. Still, I feel ‘fat’(ish). [more...]

    A productive start - Apr 1st, 2012
Spring break started on Friday, and by Saturday morning I had created a bit of a to-do list of all of the things I want to accomplish during my week+ break from classes. [more...]

    Running around - Mar 25th, 2012
Yay! Today was my third race in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge. I don’t know how I survived it, but I did! [more...]

    I’ll get by - Mar 24th, 2012
It’s been a week since I last shared my mundane life with you here on Just Frances. And it’s been nearly that long since I [temporarily?] deactivated my Facebook account. [more...]

Random thoughts: Simple pleasures - Feb 26th, 2012
Random thoughts—Week 3: List 31 simple pleasures; pick one and write about it. Last year I was challenged to write a list of 30 things that made me smile and I imagine that this list may include a few duplicates, but I will try to keep those to a minimum. [more...]

    Running on empty - Feb 18th, 2012
Today was Race Two in my goal of running a race a month throughout 2012. (A joint goal with my partner-in-crime, Rebecca.) We couldn’t find a February race within a reasonable distance, so instead we participated in the Falkirk Park Run, a weekly timed event with 150+ runners or so. (And it was free!) [more...]
