    Wrapping up 2015 - Dec 31st, 2015
With 2015 quickly coming to an end, it’s time for a bit of reflection. And as I look back at my hopes for the year, I am pleased to say that I’ve succeed in all but one of my hopes—the desire to learn how to sew a skirt. But I didn’t even attempt that one, as I realised it isn’t a truly important goal for me. And so, I’m calling the year a success! [more...]

    Carving out time - Apr 6th, 2015
I carved out time in my Easter weekend to travel to Stirling for lunch with friends today. Afterwards we went for a wee wander around the Back Walk at Stirling Castle and, to my pure joy and amusement, there were several new carvings along the walk to enjoy! [more...]

    Beating Beethoven’s record - Oct 23rd, 2014
I woke up at 6.30 on Sunday morning. The rain was dumping down like mad and I didn’t want to move. I didn’t want to start the day. I wanted to roll over and go back to sleep. I was, to say the least, feeling a bit underwhelmed. [more...]

    Just four years - Feb 15th, 2014
Just Frances is four years old. Wow! Can you believe that I’ve been spewing this utter nonsense for that long? And if you thought I might be nearing the end of rubbish things to talk about, you’re wrong. (No apologies. If you don’t like it, you can just stop reading!) [more...]

Mommy and Me: UK Tour 2012 - Oct 30th, 2013
On October 9, 2012, my Mommy showed up in Scotland for a three-week visit, leaving on October 30, 2012. Yes—a full year ago! At the time of her visit, Just Frances was down for repairs and by the time the site was back I was too busy with other tasks to sort through the hundreds of photos deciding which to share. [more...]

Old bikes and flowers - Jul 20th, 2013
When the Stirling Smith announced that they were going to unveil their restored, 1930s ice cream bicycle, I marked my calendar and prayed for nice weather. I really wanted to see this groovy old ice cream cart up-close and in person, and the lure of free ice cream made it all that much better. [more...]

    The only lake - Jul 13th, 2013
Did you know that there is only one lake in all of Scotland? I know that may be hard to believe, but it’s true. (There are, however, more than 31,000 lochs scattered about the country.) And did you know that in the middle of Scotland’s one-and-only lake is a wee island that houses an ancient priory ruin? [more...]

    A Stirling offer - Jul 4th, 2013
I won’t keep you long today because I’m just way too excited to blather on and on about my dreams of earning a PhD. Instead, I will just make an announcement and get back to my Independence Day celebrations (which have taken on an additional flair this year!). [more...]

    And another - Jun 30th, 2013
I’ve just completed an application for another PhD studentship and have realised that I am running out of options and opportunities now. In fact, there don’t appear to be any more opportunities for the upcoming academic year, and I fear that if I don’t begin my PhD studies this year, I never will. [more...]

    A Stirling opportunity - Jun 21st, 2013
You may recall that I made an enquiry about a PhD studentship back in May, and that I was a bit uncertain about how it would fit with my research interests. But after reading up on the research outline and taking the counsel of some very wise people I know, I decided that it was, in fact, an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. [more...]

Who ate all the pies? - Jun 13th, 2013
I have finally had my first pie. Well, my first Scottish meat pie at least. Pies are a pretty big deal in Scotland—in the whole of the UK, really. They’re served at sporting events much like hotdogs in America. [more...]

The abbey next door - Jun 8th, 2013
I had grand ideas to travel to Lake Menteith this weekend to check out Inchmahome Priory, but after looking at the very limited bus services to the area, I decided it was high-time I check out an old abbey ruin in my own backyard instead. [more...]

    Superstar! - Apr 15th, 2013
Today was a very different—very fun!—day for me because I got to be a big important film star for the day. There were script reviews, costume changes, and everything. I even had someone opening and closing my car door as we drove between filming locations. [more...]

    A Stirling adventure - Jan 19th, 2013
Today I decided to go out geocaching for the first time in four years. It was also the first time I’ve ever gone on a solo adventure and the first time I’ve ever done one in an urban environment. Sadly, it was also the first time I didn’t find the cache. [more...]

    Before we blogged - Jan 11th, 2013
Today I stumbled upon a new blog by the Stirling Library Archives. The blog will post highlights from the 1813 entries in Dr Thomas Lucas’ diaries, a Stirling-based surgeon. [more...]

    So long, 2012! - Dec 31st, 2012
If I am honest, I would have to say that 2012 has been a pretty unhappy year. I think it’s been even worse because I had such high hopes for it; I suppose that hoping for happiness only served to set me up for greater disappointments. [more...]

    Thanksgiving expertise - Nov 22nd, 2012
Today is Thanksgiving and, once again, I have so much to be thankful for. Of course, it’s always a little awkward being overseas on the holiday, since it’s not only not celebrated here, but it’s also not understood. [more...]

    A bloody Stirling day - Sep 16th, 2012
Today was fabulous—even as I sit here with aching muscles and feel completely wrecked. The day started off well, after a fantastic night’s sleep in my new bed, and even though it’s only early evening, I think it’s going to end pretty well, too. [more...]

Bloody Scotland; bloody fabulous - Sep 15th, 2012
There is a fabulous literary festival in Stirling this weekend, and I’ve managed to catch a bit of it today. Bloody Scotland celebrates the amazing crime writers in Scotland and (for what little I’ve seen) it’s bloody fabulous! [more...]

    New digs - Sep 15th, 2012
Today is moving day! Which means I’m kind of busy. Which means just a short post to share a video tour of the new digs. I had meant to do that last night, since I did a walk through of the place after work yesterday, but video editing issues meant that I didn’t get around to it. [more...]

    A 10K and a curry - Aug 25th, 2012
Today was the Drymen 10K in, well, Drymen, Scotland. It was also race Number 8 in my 2012 Race a Month Challenge. It was also my first time out with my friend, David, who will be starting the Loch Ness Marathon with me this year. (I say starting with me, because I’m quite certain he’ll finish well before me!) [more...]

    Heigh-ho, heigh-ho - Aug 1st, 2012
Today, I woke up at 6.30 and began getting ready for the day. I cleaned my teeth, took a shower, put on a dress, drank some coffee, ate some food, and then made my way to my office. [more...]

    Hair today - Jul 10th, 2012
Today I’m going to give a bit of a rave. It’s kind of about how awesome my hair looks, but really it’s more about how it got looking this awesome. [more...]

Big noise means big fun - Jun 21st, 2012
I had big fun tonight at The Big Noise’s Big Concert in Raploch. OK, I got wet and cold because it is summer time in Scotland and that means wind and rain—I mean really, really wet. But the music more than made up for the weather. [more...]

    A mini-reunion and a catch-up - May 15th, 2012
Oh dear, it’s been more than a week since I last posted. Sorry about that. It’s not that I’ve been sitting at home sulking though. No, I’ve been sitting at home writing essays like a mad woman! So, let me get you up to speed! [more...]

Freedom of the City - Mar 10th, 2012
My day started out pretty lazy and I didn’t have plans of leaving the flat until early afternoon. But then I learned that there was a military pipe and drum band making their way through town. Which meant that I needed to get dressed and get a move on my day. And I’m so glad that I did! [more...]

    A slow start - Jan 2nd, 2012
It’s nearly midnight on January 2nd and I’m finally getting around to writing my first post of the year. I meant to write yesterday and I’ve been meaning to write today, but life got in the way. [more...]

    The dark days - Dec 16th, 2011
The dark days of winter are upon us. Oh yes, they really are. Even more so here in Scotland compared to my (only slightly) lower-latitude homeland. But those nine degrees don’t make a difference when you’re in the deep dark of winter. [more...]

    Stained - Nov 30th, 2011
I spent the afternoon at the Stirling Smith Art Gallery today and am so glad I did because I really did need to get out of the flat for a bit. [more...]

    A thankful weekend - Nov 27th, 2011
Well, my Scottish Thanksgiving weekend has come to a close. Yes, the original planning process was difficult, and I found myself having to make do with all sorts of things to pull it off, but I think I can fairly call it a success. [more...]

    Social conscience - Nov 13th, 2011
Social lives are interesting things—and hard to define at times. Everyone seems to have one or want one. Or they want a better one or a different one or a less chaotic one. Or they laugh about how their children have better social lives than they do! [more...]

    I spy - Nov 9th, 2011
As part of my Thankful November theme, today’s post is an ‘I Spy’ photo story. So, here goes! [more...]

    Guy’s night - Nov 6th, 2011
Last night was Guy’s night. Guy Fawkes’ Night, that is. (Well, it’s more often called Bonfire Night in Scotland, but that doesn’t make for as fun of a post title!) And to celebrate, Rebecca and I went to the Bridge of Allen fireworks show. [more...]

    One man’s junk - Oct 29th, 2011
We’ve heard it a million times before: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.” Well, let me just say that I’ve found a treasure in amidst the junk—The Junk Rooms, that is. And now, it’s become a Cocktail Mecca for me and my friend, Rebecca, who introduced me to the place. [more...]

    Classy lady - Sep 23rd, 2011
It’s here! My first week of classes has finally happened! After a long journey of ups and downs and a false start or two, I am finally a postgraduate student. And here’s the promised update on that very topic! [more...]

One down; one long one to go - Sep 18th, 2011
I ran my first-ever non-American race today—a gentle 10K through my new home of Stirling. I’ve been neglecting my training so I was actually quite pleased with my time. (Sorry, you have to read more before you get that bit of information!) [more...]

    Olives - Sep 17th, 2011
I love olives. They are very much a part of my life. Olives for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Olives for tacos and nachos and pizza. Olives for tuna noodle casserole and olives for eating all on their own. Oh, and olives for martinis, of course. [more...]

    Honestly, I’ll keep blogging - Sep 14th, 2011
It would seem that I’m not very good at this whole blogging thing of late, and I apologise for that. I suppose that it has a lot to do with the fact that I am no longer living in near isolation—meaning I have real life people to talk to—and that I have been running around quite a bit visiting family and friends and getting ready for the start of term. [more...]

    Re-searching - Sep 8th, 2011
Well, I’ve done some more thinking on my flat search and have decided to increase my accommodation budget. The decision was made after looking at a flat on Tuesday that was on the upper end of my budget and realising that city centre places in that budget are not quite nice enough. [more...]

The flat hunt begins - Sep 6th, 2011
I’ve been looking at flats on line for several months and now that I’m in town, it’s time to start looking in real life! Of course, I’m starting to think it will be a long, hard, emotional process! [more...]

    Got there - Aug 13th, 2011
I suppose this is a good time to give an update on my travels, since I’ve arrived in Stirling, Scotland, and am now out and about enjoying the free WiFi access. So, here we go: [more...]

    Now about that marathon… - Jul 20th, 2011
You’d be forgiven for forgetting that I’m meant to be training for a marathon, since I’ve not really brought up the subject recently, but I really am still planning to participate (and complete) the Loch Ness Marathon in Scotland on October 2. [more...]

Have visa; will travel - Jun 25th, 2011
I got my UK visa today! Yay!! Actually, I got the email on Monday telling me I’d been approved, but wanted to wait until it was in my hands before telling you about it. It should have been delivered Tuesday, but a blunder at the consulate meant that I had to make the long drive to Spokane to pick it up in person. [more...]

    100 random things - Feb 17th, 2011
My friend posted a list of 100 random things her daughter wrote about herself out of boredom and I thought I’d give it a shot and create my own list. So, if you’re not already bored, this should help… [more...]

    The big announcement - Feb 12th, 2011
Today I gave my official notice at work and my last day will be July 8. This is a celebratory moment because it means that I can now publicly share my happy, happy news. [more...]

    Mommy & Me: UK Tour - Mar 13th, 2010
Mom and I traveled to England and Scotland to visit some my family and friends for two weeks in winter 2010. [more...]
