Hot diggity-dog
I am writing this evening with a very full belly. A very full, very happy, hot-dogged belly. And since it’s my first (proper) hotdog in more than two years, it gets its very own story!
You see, I love hotdogs. They are yummy and salty and filled with scrumptious deliciousness.
But, despite being billed as “American Hotdogs” you cannot get good hotdogs in the UK. Trust me on this and don’t investigate for yourself. Your taste buds will thank you for it. I mean – seriously! – they sell them in jars for goodness’ sake. And the texture is all wrong: Instead of hotdog texture, they’ve gone all Vienna Sausages with the texture. (No! You’re doing it wrong!)
I’ve tried on numerous occasions to like UK hotdogs, but I just can’t do it. I can’t. I’m sorry.
And that means I’ve had to wait until returning to America to enjoy a hotdog. A proper, full-on, American hotdog. Complete with chilli, cheese, and onions.
And it was delicious. Every salty bite.
Sadly, my appetite hasn’t been too fantastic these days, so I only managed one fully embellished dog this evening – in addition to a plain-and-bun-less dog and some pork-n-beans and cottage cheese.
But there will be more hotdogs during my American holidays. Oh yes, there will. And I’ll work my way through the rest of my desired foods list, too.
I am still holding out hope that one day, proper hotdogs will find their way to grocery stores in the UK, but in the meantime, I will always have a culinary treat to look forward to when I’m visiting family in the Homeland!
